The city of Vienna is thought to have been founded as early as 500 B.C. by the Celts. The Romans used it as a frontier city and called it Vindobona. Since 1440 it has been the residence of the Habsburg dynasty and capital city of the Holy Roman Empire in its various guises, the remains of which is what we call Austria today.
